Thorns And Roses

Thorns And Roses

I once chased a dream; named butterfly
Its beauty allured my young naive eye
We danced through the garden’s pallet of colour
I held it for a heart beat; and cried for an hour

Life is a garden; of roses and thorns
Thorns and Roses
Roses and thorns
Life’s a dance; in a garden;
Of roses and thorns.

I once held a bud; showed promise by
Its secrets intrigued my innocent eye
I glanced through the petal’s pallet of colour
I picked it in a heart beat; then cried for this flower

Life is a garden; of roses and thorns
Thorns and Roses
Roses and thorns
Life’s a dance; in a garden;
Of roses and thorns.

I once saw the sun, rise up in the sky
Its brightness relieved my tearful eye
We danced through the rainbow’s pallet of colour
I laughed for a heart beat; then cried over and over

Life is a garden; of roses and thorns
Thorns and Roses
Roses and thorns
Life’s a dance; in a garden;
Of roses and thorns.

One rose in a garden, where thorns grow high
Its challenge invited my roving eye
I winched through the thorn cuts blood red colour
I triumphed for a heart beat; then pained for ever

Calm After The Storm

Calm After The Storm
Calm after the Storm           © Lilian Ross

The rain falls on the world
Outside your window
I turn to watch you sleep in afterglow
Safe and warm together in love’s shelter
The cloudburst of our passion
We let flow

Calm after the storm
Calm after the storm

Grey the clouds that are the day breaks blanket
But your first smile awoke my morning sun
Oh; that it should rise; with you forever
And lay down again with you,
When day is done.

Calm after the storm
Calm after the storm

Cascading drops of silver run together
That once; like us fell so far apart
In the aftermath of stormy weather
We two became one soul
And now one heart.

Calm after the storm

The Man That Dared To Dream

The Man That Dared To Dream

No Sleep tonight
The Wolves are circling round my head
Send me an angel
To lead me from this troubled bed.
No Sleep tonight
I feel a pain of both Extremes
No way out of this..
They’ll scatter my labors and my dreams.

Oh give me an angel
The light of her wisdom
Comfort, hope or sign
For I’m losing this fight
Of an ordinary man’s right
To hold on to what is mine

No Sleep tonight
Wool thoughts spinning round my head
Send me an angel
Maybe she could find the end
No Sleep tonight
I’m at the point of deep despair
No way out of this
They’ll scatter the ashes with no prayer.

Oh give me an angel…

No Sleep tonight
I feel the sting of ice/fire eyes
Send me an angel
Please let her hear my troubled cries
No Sleep tonight
They’ll rip the heart an’ soul from me
No way out of this
They’ll scatter my pride and piety

Oh give me an angel… x2

Singing

As a child, my mother always asked me to sing when there were visitors to the farm house and still does!  I learned many traditional Scots songs and ballads as a child and have continued to add to these as I have gone through life.

My Father is a great Bothy Ballad man and also a fan of “Rabbie”.  So I had that influence as well.  I still love and admire the work of Robert Burns, which of course we still do even today, more than 250 years after his birth - an anniversary we celebrated with the “Year of Homecoming” in 2009.

I particularly like songs with a story to them and of course I have a great sense of humour so funny songs also appeal to me. I love to perform and entertain an audience with Scots and Folk songs interwoven with my storytelling and poetry at venues and festivals.

I have been working on an educational project for several years now going round schools teaching primary school children Scots Songs and rhymes.  I also have delivered Scots Song Workshops for adults.  Singing is very good for you and I can never imagine a day when I would not have a song for the children, an adult audience or... YOU!
